Talk: A (Wildflower) Year at Hyden – Dr Eddy Wajon

Dr Eddy Wajon talks about his book and his observations in Hyden.

Doors open 1.30pm for book sales and some limited plant sales.

Cost: $5 at the door.

About me
·       Current position?  Director, Wajon Publishing Company; Member of WSWA Conservation sub-committee, focusing on protecting and conserving roadside vegetation.

·       What does your position involve? Eddy has written, published and distributed five Colour Guides to the Wildflowers of WA covering different regions including the South West and the Pilbara which have had combined sales of 65,000 since 1999. He has also published Jim Barrow’s book “How to Enjoy WA Wildflowers” which has sold more than 1,500 copies. Eddy has contributed fauna, bird, pub (hotel), scenic, orchid and other wildflower photos to Australian calendars since 1998.

·       How did you get into the work? Eddy loves Western Australia’s wildflowers and other native vegetation.

·       Any interesting things about you?  Together with his wife, Eddy owns conservation bush blocks in Tenterden (Mondurup View-46ha) and Boxwood Hill (Chingarrup Sanctuary-572ha) on which he has managed and personally undertaken revegetation and weed control. Chingarrup Sanctuary is located within the GondwanaLink and was the first property in GondwanaLink purchased for conservation.  It featured on the ABC Landline program on GondwanLink in May 2014.  He leads wildflower walks and hosts wild weekends away surveying and photographing plants and animals.

About my talk
·       What are the main points of your talk?  There are wildflowers in bloom every month of the year in and around Hyden.

·       Interesting taster facts to share?  The peak in wildflowers blooming is in spring, but the peak in Eucalypt flowering is January-March.

·       Will you be bringing anything for people to try/ look at?  Colour Guide to Wildflowers of Hyden and Wave Rock, 128pp, $18ea
