Defend WA’s Nature – Wetlands Action

31 July @ 11:00 am - 12:00 pm

Our wetlands and bushlands won’t survive without strong nature laws.

Join this action on Wednesday 31 July to call on Planning Minister, John Carey, to defend WA’s nature with strong nature laws!

Brixton Wetland is a globally significant wetland – a hotspot of biodiversity within the South West Global Biodiversity Hotspot – and is home to three threatened species of Black Cockatoo. However, a proposal would see the area destroyed by clearing 257 hectares for industry in and around the wetland.

We urgently need strong nature laws that prevent the clearing of critical habitat for threatened species.

At this critical moment, the WA Government is poised to introduce nature law reforms to Parliament this August. There’s a danger that these reforms could weaken the few defences currently in place, accelerating the destruction of our fragile environment.

We’ll be showing up to give voice to the Black Cockatoos that are at risk of losing their habitats from land clearing and development like the current threat to the Brixton Wetlands. We’ll have cockatoo masks for you to wear if you would like to join in on the fun!

Make sure you also turn up on Tuesday 6 August when MPs return to Parliament, to make some noise and call on the WA Government to stop undermining our nature laws and instead ensure better protections for nature!
