The hydrology sustaining a temperate coastal salt marsh in the Swan Canning Estuary: Considering its future under urban and climate change pressures

Dr Gavan McGrath is a hydrologist researching at the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA); previously he was at UWA for many years. He recently completed a study on the hydrology of the Ashfield Flats wetland, an area with which many will be familiar.

In this presentation, Gavan will summarise a study of the water flow processes (hydrology) of a salt marsh community at Ashfield Flats Reserve. Oceanic, estuary, river and urban stormwater processes all interact to influence this salt marsh. The study highlights the urban pressures that are impacting the wetland at present and looks to the future of the ecosystem as sea levels continue to rise in the coming decades.

The presentation on the Ashfield Flats wetland will be the feature of the Perth Branch’s General Meeting on Tuesday evening, 8 February, at the Subiaco Community Centre.
