Tony Start: Mistletoes
10 February, 2022 @ 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm
Mistletoes
Dr Tony Start – Research Associate, Western Australian Herbarium
Decaisnina angustata (Photo Bill Muir)
Mistletoe expert Tony (Anthony) Start will commence his talk with what started his interest in mistletoes and his subsequent studies. Mistletoes are a beautiful part of nature, but where do they fit in the world of parasitic plants? Tony will then discuss some of the mistletoes of Western Australia (especially those of southern WA) and some ecological issues –
- Vulnerability to effects of fire and how mistletoes survive,
- Do mistletoes mimic their hosts and, if so, why?
- Are they friends or foe?
- Conservation.
The Wildflower Society uses its independent technical knowledge of WA’s wildflowers to help you better know, grow, enjoy and conserve the wildflowers of Western Australia.
