Thanks to a Lottery West grant, York Branch has been able to fulfil the need to expand our nursery to meet demand for local plants. The climate is becoming more arid and better suited to inland species.
The cost of building materials was covered by the grant. The York Mens Shed generously welded the frame components and brought them to the site for construction. A local contractor was hired to deliver cracker dust for the pad. During the process the rest of the nursery had to be kept secure, being fully stocked in readiness for the annual plant sale in May. The next step is the addition of benches along the sides & centre, before finishing off with shade cloth, weld mesh and reticulation.
The extension will increase the nursery’s capacity by 50%.
UPDATE: THEFT OF NURSERY FRAME
We were devastated to lose part of the new frame to thieves last week. Hard to understand how anyone can steal from a not for profit, community organisation.
This has set our extension program back by weeks while we wait for the Mens Shed guys to find time to make another frame. In the meantime, we have installed security cameras.
Our nursery is almost to capacity already, as we propagated with the extra space in mind.
