Seed Propagation Workshop on Saturday 5 September at Eastern Hills Branch

Having an interest in WA’s spectacular range of wildflowers will inevitably leave us wanting to try our hand at growing our own. The workshop was very informal, focussing on hands-on techniques with roving advice from our experienced growers. We started with the fundamentals – hygiene for your pots. A washing and sterilising station outside gave participants the opportunity to prepare the pots they’d brought along.

A soil station provided a pre-mixed batch of soil with coco peat and river sand to allow participants to trial different mixes.

Seed treatment included smoke water, scarification with boiling water, and discussion of other methods to improve seed germination. Participants were also given advice on how to water their germinated seeds, where to position the trays and how best to prick out and thin the successful ones.
