Transforming a parched verge into a thriving native garden (Photo: B. Eslam)
In 2019, Behrooz moved to a house in Leda, Kwinana. He bought the house without looking inside it and only realised later that he wasn’t buying the house, he was buying the land. It is a corner block of 500m² in size that faces north with bushland across the road.
The first year he watched the sun angles and realised there wasn’t enough sun in the backyard during winter to grow food, so he would put the raised beds in the front yard.
He had a bobcat remove the couch grass, spread native soil conditioner, then laid wet cardboard and heavy native mulch from a tree lopper working in his neighbourhood. He planted over 200 native tube stock and the City of Kwinana planted a verge tree, a Flowering Red Gum. He has lost just over half of what he has planted, however, what has survived has been very successful, particularly grevilleas, hakeas, wattles and banksia.
His garden attracts 25 species of birds, frogs, snakes, lizards and bandicoots. He has a frog pond which is currently full of tadpoles, a food garden, a rainwater tank and vines along the fences. He has created an oasis for nature.
