Andrew needs no introduction and his presentation on Sun Orchids will no doubt be inspiring. The genus Thelymitra was described by the German botanists Johann & George Forster in 1775 from the type T. longifolia collected from the South Island of New Zealand. The generic name is derived from the Greek thelys (female) and mitra (cap, hood) and refers to the hooded column prominent in many species.
Over the 251 years since Thelymitra longifolia was described over 100 species have been discovered. There are 36 named species in Western Australia and a further 7 species are recognised as distinct but are not yet formally named.
In this talk he will show us a sample of our beautiful Western Australian representatives of the genus.
His research has contributed greatly to our knowledge of pollination, deception and other features of these spectacular plants.
$3 nonmembers, $2 members, includes supper
