EVENT DETAILS
Grevilleas in Western Australia come in many forms with over 300 different wildflower species. As is usual with wildflowers some are very common, but others are quite rare. It is the rare ones that enthusiasts such as John Ewing are drawn to. A number of rare species have been studied and regularly monitored. For some of these John has joined study groups looking for G. tesselata, G. minutiflora, G. rosieri, G. fililoba and a number of others.
Sadly a number of others have not been monitored very well and some are close to extinction. And yet, there are some success stories as well.
One of the delights of Grevilleas is that trips of all lengths from just a morning to ones over several days are possible. A lovely three day+ trip can take you all the way from Perth down to Ravensthorpe and then if you have the inclination, onwards to Esperance before coming home via Albany and the far south-west corner. What a delight it is to be an enthusiast!!.
John is a Research Associate with the WA Herbarium studying Priority 1 and Priority 2 grevilleas. In this talk John will walk us through WA Grevilleas, the pluses and minuses of monitoring rare species and his enthusiasm for surveying them.(Photo below is Grevillea rosieri P2).
