Murdoch Branch Sept 2026 Guest Speaker.

Natasha Bowden – Traditional Uses of South-West WA Plants

Natasha’s presentation is focused on the Noongar use of local plants and the journey Whadjuk Noongar people traditionally took through the landscape of Perth (Boorloo) over the six Noongar seasons using plants for food, medicine and building materials.

She will explain the benefits of people planting local native plants as a way of caring for Country today and reducing the use of fertilisers which contribute to algal blooms. She delivers this talk as part of our Phosphorus Awareness Project which has a series of presentations focused on reducing the input of excess nutrients to waterways and the implications of excess nutrients on wetlands and rivers.

Natasha will bring Grow Local Plants, Fertilise Wise and Bush Tucker brochures for people to take home with them, and specimens of the local plants we refer to and some of the tools Noongar people made using them.

Natasha received a Bachelor of Environmental Science w/Merit Hons from Murdoch University in 1998.

In her position at the South East Regional Centre for Urban Landcare (SERCUL), Natasha works alongside school and community groups, local and state governments, and industry to deliver education about the impact of nutrients on waterways.  Natasha commenced work at SERCUL in 2016 as an Environmental Education Officer, building upon her previous employment in the environmental departments of the resource, government, consulting and community (not-for-profit) sectors. At SERCUL, Natasha develops, implements, and manages environmental education programs and community behaviour change campaigns. She coordinates the Phosphorus Awareness Project and Fertilise Wise programs, which are supported through funding from the Department of Biodiversity Conservation and Attractions (DBCA) and Mozzie Wise, an awareness campaign that seeks to educate the community about how to adopt an integrated mosquito management approach.
