The Albany Branch Herbarium

About the Herbarium

The branch herbarium is a collection of dried plant specimens, mounted on sheets of paper, named and catalogued in plant families. The collection is a valuable reference for the Western Australian native plants that grow naturally in the region.

The herbarium can be accessed by people interested in building their knowledge of our flora. The Albany Branch Herbarium is located at the rear of the DBCA, which can be found at 120 Albany Highway, Albany. Entry to the Herbarium is at the corner of Moir & Hymus Streets (black gate).

The Herbarium is open on a Tuesday and Wednesday from 9am to 12noon. Every week, volunteers administer, manage & add to the vast collection within the Albany Herbarium and we’re always on the lookout for new volunteers.

To access the Herbarium to use the resources or to become a volunteer, contact the co-ordinator Wendy Minchin on 9845 1220 or send us an email on albanyherb@outlook.com.

Branch Herbarium Activities

Building and maintaining the herbarium involves a range of tasks. Members either in groups or individually conduct field excursions collecting specimens to add to the collection. Volunteers dry the specimens between sheets of newspaper in a “plant press”. Once dried, they are named, mounted on sheets of paper and labelled. Volunteering as part of a group at the branch herbarium is an opportunity to increase your knowledge of our flora.
